Build your mileage, Build your immune system!

by Molly on August 31, 2010

Summer training leading up to fall racing season means an increase in mileage and an increased need to build up your immune system!

Emergen-C to the rescue! Emergen-C 1000mg Vitamin C is a health and energy booster with 24 nutrients, antioxidants, electrolytes, and 7 B Vitamins! Personally, I am a huge fan of Emergen-C because of the immediate results that I have experienced when I have felt a slight sniffle or cold coming on or after that physical depletion from a big race.

While running typically helps me to maintain a very high level of immunity, there are times when we can all fall victim to viruses and the common cold. I learned about Emergen-C several years ago from my sister (who is my greatest resource for alternative, naturopathic remedies) when I was feeling lousy with cold symptoms and frustrated because OTC remedies typically don’t work for me and just leave me feeling dizzy and queasy with “medicine head”. I was thrilled to discover that one packet of Emergen-C flavored fizzy drink mix combined with 4-6 oz of water provides 1000mg of Vitamin C as well as B Vitamins, is naturally flavored, free of high fructose corn syrup, free of artificial colors, and gluten free!

This past spring when my marathon training was in full swing and I was running 6 days a week 45-50+ miles a week, there were days after long runs when I would get that scratchy tickle in my throat and achy body, so I started adding Emergen-C to my recovery regimen and those symptoms would disappear! Paired with a diet rich in whole grains and a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, I can attest that Emergen-C has helped to get me to the starting line this spring and summer and has played an important role in post run recovery as well.

Perhaps my favorite feature of Emergen-C is that the individual serving packets are portable, can be mixed in seconds with just water, and the fizzy flavored drink is easy to digest. If I am headed out for a quick morning run and short on time, I will often mix one packet and drink it as an energy/carbohydrate source rather than eating something quickly that could upset my stomach.

If you have not previously heard of or  tried Emergen-C, it can be found in most grocery stores, chain pharmacies, natural food stores and even Target and Wal-mart near the energy bars and protein supplements. Additionally Emergen-C Original comes in 10 different flavors (my preference is Raspberry) so if you would like to sample prior to buying, simply complete the online request form and they will send you out a few different flavor packets!

Perhaps while we train to build mileage for fall racing, Emergen-C can help to build immunity for endurance from the inside out!

Map My Run

by Molly on August 24, 2010

Most often when I run, it is on the familiar trails near my home with my Nike + sensor to tell me how far I’ve gone. But if I want to plan a route in advance and find out the distance of that route prior to running it, I use MapMyRun.com.

I first used MapMyRun to preview the training runs that Team Ortho hosted when I was training for the Minneapolis Marathon. Each week, I would get an email with a MapMyRun link so that I could view the training route to see how far it was and what part of the city we would cover that week.

This past weekend while visiting with a family member who has taken up running again, he was saying that due to traveling for work, he is often in an unfamiliar area, yet would like to be able to find set routes with know distances to run rather than resorting to the treadmill at the hotel. I suggested that he log in to MapMyRun.com to search for routes already mapped out that he could choose from or create his own depending on his training goals.

For example, my husband, who also travels quite often for work, will be in Winnepeg, Canada in just a few weeks. Should he have time to run or bike while he’s there, I searched MapMyRun and pulled up routes with varying distances from 1.38 miles to 30.18 miles so he can take his pick!

A little closer to home, I just mapped out a 5.21 mile run which I am planning to send out to a few people from the Y who said they’re interested in doing some group runs! It’s a chance for them to preview the route and plan ahead, noting the elevation and area that we’ll cover.

You can sign up and log in for free to start mapping your own routes or choose from routes already mapped out in your area! There is also a tab to log your workouts and connect with other runners in your area – perhaps to find a new running buddy for motivation and accountability!

“Mom” Body

August 19, 2010

Feeling compelled tonight to write about not just being a Running Mom, but about being a Mom and what that has meant as an evolution for my body. This compelling feeling comes from the fact that this year alone, my sister (just a year younger than I), two sister in-laws, two dear friends from college [...]

Runner’s Right of Passage

August 11, 2010

After reading about it time and time again, it has happened to me…yesterday I lost two toenails. UG! At least they were my two little toes on my right foot and new ones are coming in behind them.  As hideous as it sounds in the middle of summer when most women would prefer a perfect pedicure, I’ll [...]

Clean Course Commitment

One Man’s Trash = Another Woman’s Environmental Calling
This is what I decided during my 7 mile run this morning. The first and last mile take me down a well-traveled, paved county road leading up to the golf course and dedicated biking/running trails. Along this mile both going out and coming back today, I was distracted [...]

Summer Lunch Solutions

Problem #1: Too hot to be hungry (but still need to “re-fuel” after run)!
Problem #2: In desperate need of a visit to the Farmer’s market, deli, and grocery store!
Cool and Crisp is all that sounds good for lunch these days as the temperature and humidity are both right where they seasonably should be on August [...]

Since my post last week Running Moms: Running Kids, I have been wanting to post some resources to help Go Running Mom readers start running programs for their own kids.

Running Mom: Running Kids

July 28, 2010

As a running mom of three, it is my hope that I set an example to lead a healthy active lifestyle. My kids have known me to be a runner for years, they have cheered me on in races and watched me come home from training runs soaked from being caught in the rain, and [...]
