Coconut Water: Options

by Molly on April 8, 2011

In the past couple of months, since I initially posted about the benefits of Coconut Water, I have had several people interested in learning more about what it is and what brands are best or what brands I have tried.

While my previous post featured several brands, I have since discovered Coco Hydro. I first tried Coco Hydro thanks

Original Coco Hydro

to a friend who reps natural food lines (Thanks Emily!) and is also very conscientious about her personal and family’s nutrition choices.

As I researched where to buy Coco Hydro, I was drawn into the parent company’s site: Big Tree Farms. The organic, raw, sustainable foods and sweeteners that Big Tree Farms offers warrants a separate blog post all together! But sticking to the topic of Coconut Water, I do want to share the informative, nutritional highlights of Coco Hydro that Fredrick from Big Tree Farms points out, along with a few of my own personal reasons for drinking coconut water.

  • Coconut Water has naturally occurring electrolytes
  • Coconut Water is high in essential vitamins, nutrients (potassium), and amino acids
  • Coconut Water has prebiotic properties which support beneficial bacteria in the stomach – Hmmm…this could perhaps be one of the most noticeable benefits to a runner who wants her hydration to not cause gastro-intestinal cramping and discomfort in the final miles of a long run or race.
  • Coconut Water does not have any artificial colors or flavors – I find the taste to be very subtle, even bland which is truly beneficial, once again as after an intense workout or perhaps after someone has been ill, you certainly don’t want sugary, sweet, stomach upsetting hydration.

Finally, the one other relevant discovery that I made regarding Coco Hydro, pertains to packaging and cost. Initially, I would buy individual bottles of Coconut Water to toss in my gym bag for post workout hydration. While I tend to be a price savvy shopper, an individual bottle cost aprox. $1.85. Are you ready for a truly drastic pricing difference…A 25 serving pouch of Coco Hydro on costs just $11.99 or less than $0.48 per serving! I can fill my own re-usable water bottle with cool water, mix in the desired amount of Coco Hydro to taste and take it to go!

With all of the nutritional benefits and the per serving cost benefits, Coco Hydro is Go Running Mom’s electrolyte replenishing, post-workout hydrating choice!
