This weekend, my husband, children and I traveled to the family farm where my dad grew up and where his mom still lives. The main purpose of our visit was to join my extended family in celebrating my Grandmother’s 90th birthday! She is an incredible lady, certainly blessed with good genes as her mother, my Great-grandmother lived to be almost 101 years old.
I look at these women with an incredible sense of awe, knowing that their daily workout came simply from working on the farm, gardening, and tending to my dad and his 7 siblings. They made bread from scratch, canned fresh fruits and vegetables and washed the laundry by hand until not so many years ago. They worked hard and perhaps their greatest source of enjoyment, still comes from being surrounded by loved ones.
Being there this weekend, I had the chance to visit with a couple of my aunts who over the years have been Running Moms as well. My dad’s older sister shared with me that she began running after her divorce, to help her relieve the stress at such a difficult time. She had also run 5K’s and 10K’s and now enjoys both Yoga and Tai Chi. We agreed that running is as much of a mental escape as it is a physical release and that certainly moms need both!
My other aunt (and godmother), started running a few years ago and is inspiring me to race my first half marathon this summer! She trained dilegently for her first half marathon with a very special coach, her own daughter, who is a high-school cross country coach, has run countless 26.2′s and was even a pacer for an Ultra-marathoner last June!
I hope that one day perhaps, my daughters and I can be training and running together, and perhaps if so, we can live to celebrate our own 90th birthdays!Tweet
